Song of the Day #17
This song by the world's greatest lapsed Catholic rock band has carried me through many a late night in lab.

Song of the Day #16 - Contemporary Music Week
Every song featured this week was released in the past 10 years. Trying to prove that the decade hasn't been completely musically worthless isn't as tough as one might think.

Mr. President, Please Try a New Rhetorical Device
For a president who owes so much to his oratorical abilities, Obama has been surprisingly cavalier about redeploying his own soundbites. I quote from his latest summit with Latin American leaders:
“Too often, an opportunity to build a fresh partnership of the Americas has been undermined by stale debates,” he said. “And we've heard all these arguments before, these debates that would have us make a false choice between rigid, state-run economies or unbridled and unregulated capitalism; between blame for right-wing paramilitaries or left-wing insurgents; between sticking to inflexible policies with regard to Cuba or denying the full human rights that are owed to the Cuban people.”
I then quote from his speech on embryonic stem cell reserach:
"...our government has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral values."
And from his inaugural address:
"As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals."
Mr. President, are there any real choices to be made?

Song of the Day #11
The second verse of this tune puts it among my all-time favorites.
